Illusion or Reality?

Sometimes, a mirror doesn’t show you your reflection. It just shows you the version of yourself you have learned to present.

I sprayed the cleaner onto the mirror and began wiping it. With every stroke of my hand, the foggy glass cleared a little more.

And with every stroke, my reflection became clearer. Until suddenly, I was looking straight at myself—smiling.

A beautiful smile.

For a moment, I stopped, stared and a thought showed up!

Is this really me?

The mirror was telling me that I looked fine.

But it knew nothing about what was happening inside my head.

It couldn’t see the thoughts I was trying to silence.
It couldn’t see the questions I was carrying.
It couldn’t see the parts of me that never make it to the surface.

It only reflected the version of me that was visible.

And perhaps that’s what we do every day.

We become very good at looking okay.

We smile when we’re tired.
We say “I’m fine” when we’re not.
We learn how to make our faces tell a story our minds don’t believe.

But the mirror doesn’t lie.

It simply doesn’t tell the whole truth.

I kept looking at my reflection, wondering whether the person I was searching for was somewhere behind that face.

And then another thought came—

The moment we start introspecting our true nature, smiling even at our own reflection just doesn’t change what’s deep down.

The face in the mirror will change.

So will the smile.

So will the person I think I am today.

Maybe the point isn’t to find a permanent version of myself.

Maybe it’s to keep looking inward without becoming too attached to whatever I find. I smiled at my reflection again.

Not because I had figured myself out. Not because everything inside me was okay. But because, for a brief moment, I didn’t need to.

The mirror showed me a face.
I was left wondering about the one looking through it.
